Pumas are also known as mountain lions and cougars. They are often misidentified because people rarely ever see them in the wild, and because when they do it is usually from far away and during hours when the natural light is low or absent. One of the ways to differentiate a puma from a bobcat is by their tail. A puma's tail is long with a dark tip. A bobcat tail is very short. See the image on this page of a puma.
